Has anyone ever weighed a guitar before and after it was finished? You could calculate the weight of the finish applied to the guitar and get an idea of finish thickness. (assuming you knew its density and the area of the guitar and assuming uniform coverage)

I think I remember seeing someone say that Adam Stark has or does.

I have a guitar just about ready to finish. I'll take the weight of the body and the neck before and after and will post back in a month or so.

Anyone else at the finish stage? We should have a couple of tests.Rod True38755.0393518519

I think I will do the same with just the body. That's the only part I ship out to get finished.

What is the weight delta due to humidity changes? You'll have to factor that in.

I did the math for this, once, and posted it on the acoustic guitar forum someplace...

It's easy enough.

Carefulkly weigh a known size of cured finish; in my case, I took a block of cured polyester to a paper lab with scales that measure to 4 decimals to the gram(.0001 gram!).

Then calaculate the surface area of the guitar(I was just concerned with the top), multiply by the thickness of the finish, and do the math.

It was pretty light, in the end.

Trying to weigh the entire guitar before and after would bring in too many variables, such as the humidity, and even the inclusion of a small sliver of wood or something loose within. Weighing a 4 to 4-1/2 pound guitar also can't be done on a scale with great enough resolution; even a postal scale only weighs to the closest gram, but the entire finish may only weigh a few grams for each surface.
